Glenn Close On The Emotional Impact Of The Wife: “I Just Didn’t Know How To Act It”

Glenn Close has got a new theory about good acting

Glenn Close has got a new theory about good acting. “When I’m in agony, I just have to act through it,” she tells Vogue on the eve of the BAFTAs 2019. “There were scenes in The Wife that I found so hard. The emotion hit me in the stomach, because the relationship was so complex.”

Her lifelong objective – “to choose films that represent a challenge and new emotional, psychological territory” – has paid off. After 45 years as a working actress, Close is hitting a home run of Best Actress accolades for her role as Joan Castleman – the long-suffering partner and ghost writer of Nobel-winning author Joe Castleman – in The Wife, Björn Runge’s quietly devastating adaptation of the 2003 Meg Wolitzer novel of the same name. But Close herself couldn’t be more surprised that her name has been called over her “category sisters” Lady Gaga, Melissa McCarthy, Olivia Colman and Yalitza Aparicio for a role in a film that took 14 years to make.

It was only when Close was seated on the balcony at the Toronto Film Festival premiere when she realised the extent of the film's emotional impact. “I was floored by how a little film and its nuances could catch people unaware,” she recalls. “It really touches a nerve, and uncovers something that is hidden but has not healed.”

The last fight scene, in particular, is an emotional stalemate between a woman who has given everything to a man who never felt worthy of love, because fundamentally he thinks of himself as a failure. “Joe asks Joan, ‘do you love me?’ and I just didn’t know how to act it,” Close remembers. “I think that’s probably how the character felt – it was so unfair of him to ask her that.”

Over the phone, the 71-year-old actress is as gracious as one might expect given her string of considered awards speeches, and pinpoints the film’s success down to her collaborators. “Björn Runge is the essence of an actor’s director – he really knows the process and he respects it,” she comments on his ability to light and frame a scene. “It seems so basic, but a lot of times it doesn’t happen.” As for the “magnificent” Jonathan Pryce, who plays her partner? “Oh boy, we had fun.”

Along with the screenplay writer Jane Anderson, Close and Pryce did a considerable amount of rewriting before the cameras started rolling. “I was in the o-zone for most of the time,” she recalls of the intense preparation period in Glasgow. “I had to understand her emotional arc, because it was a complicit relationship.” When Joan began “fixing” her husband’s writing, she simultaneously made him a hack and got what she wanted, which was to write and have people read her work. “It’s not all him, she bought into it until she couldn’t anymore.”

The worry that “every woman in the audience would get fed up with Joan for not leaving Joe” is a distant memory, but the film has struck a particular chord in the wake of the Time’s Up movement. “It’s phenomenal, because when we shot the film in 2016, #MeToo didn’t exist,” she muses. “People’s sensibilities towards it are more acute now.” Close touched on the subject in her “spontaneous” Golden Globes acceptance speech –  “It was called The Wife. I think that's why it took 14 years to get made,” she said – and had people on the street thanking her for highlighting the sexism within the industry and day-to-day life. “The response was remarkable,” she says. “I feel pressure because I don’t think I’ll be able to repeat that again.”

With the BAFTAs around the corner, and the Oscars in sight, you get the feeling that Close, a Hollywood doyenne who has built a career on choosing women who intrigue her, just might take home the Academy Award. But, even if she doesn’t, she has already won for the women she took on her journey when she told them to “follow [their] dreams” on stage at the Globes.

The Young and the Restless spoilers for next week

The Young and the Restless spoilers for next week’s episode of the CBS soap promise that February sweeps will bring a torrent of drama and delight as the month plays out

The Young and the Restless spoilers for next week’s episode of the CBS soap promise that February sweeps will bring a torrent of drama and delight as the month plays out.

Will J.T’s killer finally be found and arrested? And what about the news that a fan fave is set to return to Genoa City? Stay tuned fans, we’ve got all of the soapy Y&R news that’s fit to print!

Is Adam about to rock Genoa City with his bad boy ways once again? The character last played by This Is Us star Justin Hartley is reportedly coming back to town, and if so a boatload of sturm und drang is sure to follow because he is dead after all!

Oops, in soaps everyone has 18 lives, so Adam’s return would be surprising but not shocking. What in the world would he stir up? Is he the secret friend loitering in the Newman house? Could he be the one behind Victor (Eric Braeden) being framed for J.T.’s death?

In the meantime don’t count the Newman’s out just yet. Yes, Nikki (Melody Thomas Scott) supposedly did the dirty deed, and Victor may take the fall for it, but they have the guile and resources to beat this thing, and you do not want to miss what they pull off next week.

Meanwhile how awkward was it when Lola (Sasha Calle) yelled out her virgin status for all to hear at Crimson Lights? Very. Awkward.

And it is just the ammo that Summer (Hunter King) needs to take down the man in her sights, Kyle (Michael Mealor).

Right about now Kyle looks ripe for some Summer Lovin’ but he may surprise you with how he treats Lola next week.

Are we ready for Shick 42.0? Because that’s what it’s looking like now that these two are commiserating over their mutual J.T. mess!

The Young and the Restless airs weekdays during the day on CBS.

Avengers: Infinity War Comic-Con Footage Leaks Online

Avengers: Infinity War Comic-Con Footage Leaks Online

Thanos is finally coming and we have the footage to prove it. That's right, Marvel fans! Disney wanted to make a big impression at D23 and, as such, they decided to bring some footage from Avengers: Infinity War to the party. Sadly, they just didn't release it for everyone to see. They didn't want to leave the fans at San Diego Comic-Con out, so they brought the footage to Hall H as well. They didn't intend for the footage to make it online after SDCC either, but fans simply can't be trusted. As such, some of the footage has leaked online and you can check it out right now. But you're going to want to watch it while you still can.

Marvel is always going to have a presence at San Diego Comic-Con. That's a given. But they decided to bring the biggest movie on their upcoming slate to D23 this year as well. Why not? It is Disney's event, after all. No better place to finally reveal some Avengers: Infinity War footage for the first time. But why not bring that, as well as some of their other upcoming movies, to San Diego Comic-Con? And that's exactly what they did. Marvel Studios previously released a behind-the-scenes video that teased the massive event film, and, at least in an official capacity, that is all they have given us. But this first bit of footage, even though it isn't ideal, totally lives up to the hype.

Avengers: Infinity War serves as the culmination of a decade worth of MCU movies and it is going to live up to that legacy. The footage is absolutely loaded with stuff to unpack. Captain America is rocking a beard looking full-on Nomad, Black Widow is blonde for some reason, Loki is up to no good. But like, way worse than we're used to and the Guardians hit Thor with their spaceship. Oh and did we mention that Thanos throws a planet? Because Thanos throws a planet. And Spider-Man definitely uses his Spidey sense. It is also pretty slim on the humor. This looks dark, serious and intense. We don't get to see all of that in this brief leak, but this gives a great taste of what to expect.

Joe Russo and Anthony Russo very successfully directed Captain America: The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Civil War. That led to Kevin Feige putting them in charge of directing the next two Avengers installments for Marvel, which includes Avengers: Infinity War and the still untitled Avengers 4. That is an awful lot to trust the directing duo with, considering that these movies are going to be the culmination of everything that the MCU has accomplished over the last decade. No pressure, gentleman. But considering Captain America: Civil war is one of the highest-grossing MCU movies and both of their efforts are considered to be among the best Marvel has put out, they probably don't have reason to be concerned. The Avengers are in good hands.

Avengers: Infinity War is poised to rule the summer box office next year when it arrives on May 4, 2018. Avengers 4 is going to follow a year later on May 3, 2019, which will be bringing an end to Marvel's Phase 3 plans. It's all been leading to this. Thanos is here. The Infinity Stones have been gathered. The world needs saving and The Avengers are the ones who have to do it. We're ready. Be sure to check out the first leaked footage from Avengers: Infinity War for yourself below.

New 'Justice League' Poster Is Really Colorful And Optimistic

New 'Justice League' Poster Is Really Colorful And Optimistic

Okay, we get it. Fair or not, the DCEU films (save for Wonder Woman) have been accused of being very dark and somber and colorless affairs. I may call foul on that charge (Larry Fong's Batman v Superman cinematography is still a sight for sore eyes either in IMAX or on HBO), but that's the narrative. And since Justice League's marketing is very much about disputing or changing the narrative, it makes sense that much of the art that we've seen has been really colorful and/or implicitly optimistic.

So, hours ahead of the SDCC panel which will presumably unveil a Justice League trailer and various other DC Films announcements, we've got a new poster and a new banner courtesy of the Twitter feed. And sure, enough, the theme is "Yay!" The color scheme is painfully bright (with arguably Alex Ross-inspired character designs), the heroes are almost... happy? And the tagline is weirdly conversational. As I've said before, I could never have imagined that a Justice League movie would be sold in such a casual/gee-whiz kinda way, but that's what we're going to see for the next few months.

Anyway, the actual design is pretty clever, using the respective logos to help spell out said tagline, and it's nice that it's not another "heroes stare off into the distance" sell. Sure, you can make the case that Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman should be in the center, but the word choice kinda demanded that Ben Affleck's Batman be in the middle. And I'm amused that we've got a Superman logo without Superman actually showing up in this poster. I'm curious as to whether we'll see Clark in the next trailer or whether Warner Bros. will hold off the reveal for as long as possible.

I think what's weird about all of this, and this isn't a criticism, is that we've got a Justice League movie that is being sold more like a Super Friends movie. That's for a future post after we get a look at that second trailer later today. But that's all I've got for the moment as my kids are requesting my attention. I'll be back for the actual panel in a couple of hours.

Sonic Forces Gets Trailer Showing More of the New Villain ‘Infinite’

Sonic Forces Gets Trailer Showing More of the New Villain ‘Infinite’

Sega launched a new trailer for their fast-paced action game Sonic Forces, coming to PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC Holiday 2017.

The trailer shows more of the new villain in Sonic Forces named “Infinite”. This characters has joined up with Eggman’s henchmen, which include Chaos, Metal Sonic, Shadow and Zavok, who have already taken of the world. The group will try and stop Sonic at every turn as he attempts to put a stop to their plans to create more panic and disorder.

The character was first revealed during E3 2017, but now we see exactly what he is capable of in a new cutscene. Interestingly, he is faster than Sonic and seems to be stronger, but as we’ve learned every enemy has their weakness.

Sonic Forces borrows gameplay from multiple Sonic titles and brings them together for a fast action title featuring 3D and 2D levels for players to experience.

Additionally, players will be able to create custom heroes to play as throughout the game’s story. This will include in-depth customization mechanics, which will be sure to produce some interesting characters once players get their hands on the game this holiday.

The Chinese New Year

The Chinese New Year

If capital outflow is any indication of confidence in the economy, The Year of the Monkey will indeed be difficult for China—and the world will have spillover effects to manage.

On Monday, the Chinese will celebrate their new lunar year—The Year of the Monkey. Based on its traits, astrologers are predicting that the year will be a difficult one for investors, and that financial markets are likely to remain volatile.

That is perhaps not a very difficult call to make. Economic indicators and market movement in the recent past suggest that things are not going to be easy in the world’s second largest economy.

There are multiple challenges that markets and policymakers will have deal with during the year.

For instance, the latest news shows that foreign exchange reserves once again declined by about $100 billion in January to reach their lowest level since 2012.

This is after the Chinese central bank burnt a similar amount to defend the renminbi in December.

If capital outflow is any indication of confidence in the economy, The Year of the Monkey will indeed be difficult for China—and the world will have spillover effects to manage.

Ex-Survivor contestant charged with possessing child abuse images

Ex-Survivor contestant charged with possessing child abuse images

Michigan authorities have charged a former Survivor contestant with possessing child abuse images and running a Ponzi scheme.

Michael Skupin was arraigned on Friday in Oakland County on a dozen felony charges, including child porn possession, larceny by conversion and racketeering. His bond was set at $350,000.

It wasn’t clear if Skupin has an attorney. The Associated Press left messages Saturday with county and state government representatives.

State attorney general Bill Schuette says investigators found the child abuse images on Skupin’s laptop while looking into the alleged Ponzi scheme.

Authorities say Skupin persuaded people to make $10,000 investments in his scheme and used new investors’ money to pay older ones.

Skupin was rescued by helicopter after falling into a campfire and burning his hands in 2001 on Survivor II: The Australian Outback.

Lewis Diuguid: Help with food in Thanksgiving is just an app or hotline call away

At some point in life, nearly everyone attempts his or her first turkey and Thanksgiving Day meal.

Because of that — and the potential to botch it royally, the U.S. Department of Agriculture wants novices and even some pros to know there is help out there, and it’s just a smartphone app away. That app will connect cooks to the Agriculture Department’s 30-year Meat and Poultry Hotline.

Experts can walk people through the most frantic kitchen catastrophes. More than anything, the hosts of Thanksgiving Day meals — and the mounds of leftovers that follow — want the food that guests will eat to be well-cooked and safe to prevent food borne illnesses.

The Agriculture Department’s Food Safety Education staff reports that more than 46 million turkeys will be cooked and eaten in the U.S. during the Thursday holiday. The trick is trying to figure out when the big bird is done and not letting it get too dry and overcooked.

The Food Safety Education staff recommends that cooks use a food thermometer to “cook like a pro.” Put the thermometer in the innermost part of the bird’s thigh, the innermost part of the wing and the thickest part of the breast.

Read the thermometer to make sure the turkey has reached a minimum internal temperature of 165 degrees Fahrenheit. Only then can cooks take the bird out of the oven without worry.

The Agriculture Department advises cooks to plan ahead for that Thanksgiving Day meal. It also recommends using the FoodKeeper smartphone app, offering storage advice on more than 400 different food and beverage items.

It can help Thanksgiving Day hosts decide what leftovers to keep and what to toss.

For folks who aren’t in the high-tech world of smartphones and need real people to talk to, the Agriculture Department Meat & Poultry Hotline is available at 1-888-MPHotline (1-888-674-6854). The hotline has been around for 30 years with experts offering food preparation and safety advice.

Last year for the Thanksgiving holiday, experts fielded more than 3,000 calls mostly about the big holiday feast. Cooks can also chat live with a food safety expert at AskKaren.gov. That’s available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Central Standard Time Monday through Friday in English and Spanish.

On Thanksgiving Day, the Meat & Poultry Hotline is open for calls from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Central Standard time.

People with additional food safety questions can go to FoodSafety.gov. It’s on Twitter at @USDAFoodSafety and Facebook at Facebook.com/FoodSafety.gov.

Molly Shattuck, the Former Oldest Cheerleader in the NFL, Sobs as She Gets 48 Weekends in Jail for Raping 15-Year-Old Boy

Molly Shattuck, formerly the oldest cheerleader in the NFL, was sentenced to 48 weekends in jail on Friday for raping a 15-year-old boy.

The ex-Baltimore Ravens cheerleader, 48, burst into tears as the judge announced her sentence, according to NBC News. She then promised to make amends.
"I will spend the rest of my life making this right," she said.
In June, Shattuck pleaded guilty to one count of fourth-degree rape in the Sussex County Superior Court in Georgetown, Delaware.
Her relationship with the boy allegedly began online in May 2014. Shattuck eventually invited the victim, along with her children and some of their friends, to a vacation home in Delaware over the Labor Day weekend.
The boy later told police she gave him alcohol and performed oral sex.
On Friday, the victim's mother and father asked the judge to sentence Shattuck to more than just probation.
"Any adult who rapes a child deserves to be in prison," the boy's mother said in court, according to USA Today. "Please hold her accountable."
Shattuck will spend every other weekend in jail for the next two years.
